Plastic not leather and are a bit low on the back of my heel. Also have one little toe 'pop out' of the strap. Not sure if this is me problem or a sandal problem lol If you are a serious walker, I would not recommend but if you just want something flat and comfy for strolling around on holiday - excellent!
